Growing Practices:

Latin Name: Persicaria tinctorium

Days to Maturity: 80+

Description:

This is the Japanese indigo used to create blue dyes. The leaves can be used fresh or dry for dye purposes. There are a lot of ways to dye with it and information is widely available on the internet. The flowers of this selection range from light pink to very pink. Occasionally there are all white flowers. Insects go crazy for the flowers, which are like minute buckwheat flowers. Both plants are in the same family and share characteristics. Can be cut multiple times in a season for dye material.

Growing Tips:

Grows easily in warm and wet weather. Given that I am in Florida, this is not an issue. It is known to have wide adaptability. Can be direct sown in a fine seed bed or transplanted. Plants can benefit from 1 ft spacing or more.
