Grows and Sells: Gourds
Soahn Kuehner
About the Farm
We live and farm on our property in northern New York, sharing our space with our free-range chickens and ducks and rehabilitating native wildlife.
Our Commitment to Quality Seed
Seeds are hand pollinated from other plants of the same variety. Female flowers are individually covered before and after polination to assure a pure strain.
Our Growing Practices
We grow for our family, community, and to provide habitat and food for the local wildlife. We are constantly experimenting with new varieties a techniques to overcome the challenges of the local soil and limited space. Last year we grew our gourds hanging from trellisses, which might not sound unique until you know that our gourds included giant varieties like 100lb Bushel and Large Kentucky bushel and African Drum suspended in individual gourd hammocks.
Our Seed Farming Experience
We save and share our seeds so that other growers can enjoy the unique and hard-to-find varieties that we enjoy.
Regional Adaptation
We select our product for quality/flavor and ability to cope with adverse soil and weather of northern NY, culling any varieties that succomb to insects or disease. Plants with long growing seasons may require starting early and planting outside with protection from the cold before the last frost in the spring. For example, we start our african drum gourds in March and plant outside in Mid April under temporary plastic-covered arches.
