Grows and Sells: Corn
Randall Lance
About the Farm
Located in N Central Florida, we began growing Satsuma mandarins and chestnuts. After several crops of watermelons the fields were turned to pasture for grass fed beef. We keep a small acre size garden and the family provides all the labor. The citrus covered by icicles demonstrates the challenges posed by a shifting finicky climate. I also keep several beehives and a variety of dooryard fruit trees; permaculture style.
Our Commitment to Quality Seed
After trialing many varieties of corn, Floriana is the tastiest I have found for grits and cornmeal. I planted well ahead of local farms so my field would finish tasseling weeks before any wind blown pollen could contaminate genetic purity.
Floriana is still rare, so why not share?
Our Growing Practices
I found early on that chemical farming was a losing proposition in food quality, plant resistance and environmental safety.
Treated hybrid and GMO seed is toxic to bees and generally less nutritious.
Our Seed Farming Experience
I began saving seeds of hard to find favorites like Seminole pumpkins and certain tomatoes and hot peppers many years ago. With the price of seed today and poor availability of heirlooms, it only makes sense.
Regional Adaptation
Thriving and surviving adapts any crop to local conditions..it's simple natural selection..then save seed from what works..
